The Twilight Paths

[in progress]

"For all men seek something, whether it be in truth or deception, sunlight or shadow, revelation or concealment; some find it, and some do not...There is always more than one path to the desires of Man, but they all follow the paths of the Between.  We call these the Twilight Paths."

There exist people that belong to both worlds of Day and Night, Light and Dark. Thus, it is that they do not belong in either one. We of the Paths of Twilight open a circle of the moon, of the sun, to half-crescents, unbarring the way through to a home for those who do not belong. For we are all travelers, all transients stranded Between, having long forgotten our beginning, and now too far gone to return to it. The Dark is blinding, and when we are in the Light, we cannot see. Only in the Twilight is knowledge revealed, things unknown made known. In Dawn and Dusk, we find and know ourselves.

As twilight occurs between the coming and going of dusk or dawn, so does the creed of the Twilight Paths exist in the Between.  It is in the realm between Before and After, in the time and space of Becoming**

The Path of Dawn

"To see.  To name.  To know."

The creed of Undavayne's followers, the Path of Dawn, unites philosophers, scholars, scientists, and explorers alike.  It is to Undavayne, the patron god of philosophy, that they pay homage, and he blesses them with his light.  Though its inception is intractable, scholars date the first written records of Undavayne's followers to the Second Age.

Core beliefs

The doctrine of Being

Constancy of natures. Natures of men, beast, and the world do not change and are predictable.
Persistence of existence. All things that now exist have always existed, and shall exist forever after.  The existence of all things persists beyond time, perception, and even the Creator himself.

The Path of Dusk

"Just as light casts its shadow, so Dawn has its Dusk.  Just as day begins, so it ends.  All things have their place in the Path of Twilight."

Geilis, the Blind God, emerged from the shadows of the forest when Undavayne ventured there on Léonna, but not long after, he returned to his gloom.  It was the nature of things that he became the Shrouded One.  What Undavayne had revealed, Geilis concealed.  What was bathed in light became veiled in shadow.  What was once known became secret.  Thus, the Time of Secrets began, when hidden knowledge and mystery arose in the world.

Followers of Geilis are widespread, for shadows are many and scattered throughout the world, but all have their origins in the forests of Léonna.  Though typically associated with criminal activity, not all Dusk are such.  They are spies, thieves, and even assassins, but they are also the keepers of secrets, mysteries, and hidden knowledge; some of the most adept Duskwardens are librarians.  Hiding in plain sight, they are everywhere and nowhere.

Core beliefs

The doctrine of Becoming

The beliefs of the Path of Dusk are steeped in nuance.*

Malleability of natures.  Natures of men, beasts, and the world are mutable and unpredictable.  Things are not always as they seem.
Contingency of design.  All things, though discovered by Undavayne, were created before Dawnbreak.  Creation is contingent upon a designing force, for everything comes from something; spontaneous generation is impossible.
